Museu de Mértola - Basílica Paleocristã

Mértola

This funerary basilica was located next to the Roman road connecting Mértola to Beja. This important monument was partially excavated in the late 19th century, and several funerary inscriptions were recovered from it, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Lisbon. Currently, it houses a museum where the foundations and floors of the former church are preserved. This museum contains inscribed stelae, which constitute the most important collection of Early Christian tombstones found in Portugal.

The Zêzere River passes through the municipality of Belmonte and this small museum shows all its history and characteristics. From the source to the mouth, visitors can learn more about the species that live in the river that rises in Serra da Estrela, as well as the vegetation that surrounds it. This museum center was created in the old Tulha dos Cabrais, an austere building that functioned as the granary of the most important family in the village, whose manor is located right in front of it.

Built in the 16th century, the building initially housed the Convento das Freiras Terceiras Regulares de S. Francisco, dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Loreto. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a military headquarters and hospital. After the explosion of 1810, it was remodeled and became the village's Mother Church. Inside, the Capela do Menino Jesus stands out, with a portal from 1699. Currently, the temple is dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Candeias.

Barely visible megalithic monument in the landscape, in the Megalithic Necropolis of the plateau of Mourela and located about ten meters from the road which connects Pitons to Tourém. Features about nine meters in diameter, with a "tumulus" almost shallow and a central Depression bit accentuated. Identify traces of dolmen, notably a mainstay, not being visible remnants of armor. It lies approximately 10 metres of paved road which connects Pitons to Tourém.

Alvito

Church built at the end of the 15th century, it underwent several expansion works in the following centuries. This temple brings together several styles, from Gothic to Baroque, including Manueline, Renaissance and Mannerism. On the south side is the bell tower that boasts a marble sundial. The interior body of the church is shaped like a cross and has three naves with vaults that feature Gothic and Renaissance elements. Much of the interior is covered in 17th century tiles.

Manueline building where stands out the gate assigned to Marcos Pires, the triumphal arch and the vault of the chancel of Diogo de Castilho. The altarpiece of the main Chapel, triptych, presents in the center pane Nossa Senhora da Graça on the side panels and the conversion of St Paul and the fall of Simon Magus, representing the primitive Portuguese painting. Note also the altars with 16th century paintings and tiles from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Mértola

On a steeply sloping area below the castle lies the old mosque, converted into a Christian church in the 13th century, with a Manueline-Mudejar façade featuring battlements and spires. It is the only one that still retains the volume and some decorative elements of the Arab temple that preceded it, notably the "T" layout, the presence of the mihrab and the compartment in the "qibla" (mosque wall) facing Mecca, the existence of five naves from the old mosque, the statuary, doors, and remains of the mihrab.

The Santo Ildefonso Church is placed at the beginning of the street with the same name. This church stands out immediately for its azulejos (tiles), which cover almost all of it. Its reconstruction started in 1730, because the first church was in ruins, and ended in 1737. The walls have Jorge Colaço’s azulejos (1932), with scenes from Saint Ildefonso’s life and Eucharist allegories. The lateral altars are neoclassical works and the co-lateral altars are rococo.
