This church was founded in 1636 and it is an example from the sixteen hundreds architecture, with a plan in Latin cross, one only nave with lateral chapels, transept and ample main chapel. This temple served as the Cathedral when the Bishopric of Aveiro was created. Its construction began in 1600, by Gregório Lourenço. In 1608 the Casa do Despacho was completed, in 1623 the body of the church and main door and, in 1653, the chancel. This castle was formerly a Lusitanian fortification, but it was the Romans who made it militarily important. During the reign of King Dinis, fortification and expansion work was carried out, with six towers being erected and walls being built around the town. After losing its defensive function, the castle fell into decline. Currently, only a few sections of the walls, some gates, and two towers remain.
