Also known as Solar dos Castros, this house was built in 1777 using reused earlier structures, such as kitchen vaults and grain bins. It features a vast façade divided by pilasters into five sections highlighted by decorative motifs. The central section features a granite gate topped with a coat of arms. The garden, with an eighteenth-century design, consists of geometric flowerbeds bordered by boxwood hedges, a pond, and a small fountain. The vegetation is topiary-like, with a curious maze of tall hedges and houses carved from shrubbery standing out.

Founded in 1929 by Rafael Salinas Calado, it started out as an annex to the Church of São Pedro. After being transferred to the building of the former headquarters of the Irmandade da Santa Casa da Misericórdia, he would still move again. Museu de Etnologia do Porto

When it was created, in 1945, it was called “Museu de Etnografia e História do Douro Litoral”. Since that time it is placed at the Plácio de São João Novo, dated from the XVIII century. This monument has been suffering a huge degradation, being, in 1989, under the guardianship of the IPPC and, in 1991, of the IPM. Closed to the public since 1992, the IPM has being transferring its collections to various museums. Works in the façade and the coverings of the palace have being made and, after the inventory systematization, the intension is to solve the problem definitively.

The current Palace, with an exotic Oriental plan, was built from an 18th century building that imitated a medieval castle. A possession of the Mello e Castro family, it was rented to Gerard DeVisme at the end of the 18th century, who bulit a neogothic manor. In 1856 it was acquired by Francis Cook, who built a new Oriental palace, with revivalist motifs, a true testimony to the romantic architecture. He also ordered the plantation of the Moserrate Park, that combines exotic and local plants, currently an important botanical museum. Nowadays, one may only visit the gardens.

Francisco Sá Carneiro was a Portuguese politician, founder and leader of the Popular Democratic Party\/Social Democratic Party, and Prime Minister of Portugal, for about eleven months, in the year 1980. Francisco Sá Carneiro died on the night of December 4, 1980, in tragic circumstances and never completely clarified, when the plane in which followed crashed at Camarate, shortly after takeoff from Lisbon Airport, as he headed to the port to take part in a rally in support of the presidential candidate of the Coalition, General António Soares Carneiro.

Building where the XV century Porto’s trade exchange ran. It has the medieval arms of the Casa de Avis, which recall the role of the King Dom João I on the renovation of the present Infante Dom Henrique Street. The building was restored in the reign of Dom Afonso V and became, also, the entrance to the Casa da Moeda (mint), from which you still can see the XVI century door. It was the Crown’s and the morgados de Fermedo property, one of the families that ennobled this important street and business centre of the old town.
