Sanctuary in honor of Saint Benedict, from where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the entire Serra do Gerês mountain range. The chancel and altar are dedicated to this saint, a cult that dates back to the mid-18th century. The sanctuary hosts the main pilgrimage from August 10 to 15, and other festivities on March 21 and July 11.
The infrastructure located next to the Vilarinho das Furnas Museum is the ideal place to receive tourists and provide them with a wide range of information about the National Park, specifically what they can visit, thus becoming an Interpretive Center for the National Park. The space is composed of seven themed rooms, namely: “History of the Earth I and II” – describing the formation of the Serra Gaúcha; the “History of Rain” room, which portrays water and all biodiversity with emphasis on riparian vegetation; the “Forest Room”; the “Territory, Museum and Mountain” room, which addresses the occupation of the territory …
This watermill, on the banks of the Dão River, is still in operation. It consists of two millstones, which can operate simultaneously, and includes a water access channel that ends in a funnel, causing the water to enter the mill with greater force, as it falls from a height of 5 meters.
This is one of the most important Marian Shrines in Portugal. Its main heritage value, included in the attached museum of sacred art, lies in the richness of its artwork, architecture, gilded wood carvings, images of saints from various periods, varied liturgical objects in gold and silver, gold-embroidered vestments, oil paintings of clergy figures, and a valuable collection of ex-votos. This Shrine was elevated to the status of Royal Shrine by Royal Charter in 1873, and together with its eight chapels and staircase, it constitutes one of the most interesting and beautiful places in the municipality.
