This nice Algarve town keeps its labirynth of small narrow streets, sided by white houses, with a special note to the towers of the old Castle. The vertical lines of the minaret that remains of of old mosque and the horseshoe shaped archways of the Market lend it a vague arabic tone. By the Tenente Cabeçadas square observe a beautiful gothic portico that once was part of a convent and do visit the churches of São Clemente, Matriz de Loulé and Misericórdia.

Melgaço Castle currently consists of an imposing keep - with three floors, a parapet protruding over corbels, crowned by pyramidal merlons and with a hipped tile roof - and the surrounding walled enclosure, in a good state of conservation. It is believed that it may have had 3 towers and two doors, according to Duarte de Armas in his “Livro das Fortalezas” (Book of Fortresses) from 1509. The current tower houses the Melgaço Keep Tower Museum.

According to legend, the foundation of this castle began with a hillfort that allowed Viriato's companions to withstand a seven-year siege. Later, it also withstood Arab, Castilian, and French attacks. It is located amidst a rocky outcrop, at a strategic lookout point. Dom Afonso Henriques granted it a charter in 1174 and donated it to the Templars, who built the castle. Of the imposing medieval fortress, only the quadrangular Torre de Lucena and Torre do Pião remain.

Founded in 1540, this convent features of various eras. In this monument are the main façade, the taste, the filipino side, with its three-story portico, (being the last Baroque, with pediment crowned by the Royal shield). A special attention to the balcony of Kings, five arches Gallery to the left side of the portico, the two cloisters and the interior, with three naves, with all its decoration. Currently, works here the Municipal Museum Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.
