Miranda do Douro

Known by the Romans as Seponcia and by the Arabs as Mir-Andul, Miranda do Douro lies on a plateau between the Douro, Fresno and Angueira rivers. Due to its borders with Spain it was, from an early age, the target of several clashes with Castile, which left it in ruins. Dom Henrique ordered its fortification and granted it a charter given its strategic value. In 1545 Dom João III elevated the village to the town status. It is worth taking a walk through the historical center of Miranda, noting the historical constructions and the street signs named in Mirandese. This dialect, which derives from the old Leonese, was recognized as a second official language of Portugal in 1999. It is currently taught in some schools of the county and it is believed to be spoken by between 6000 and 10000 people. Inserted in the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional (International Douro Natural Park), it offers beautiful views of the verdant slopes clipped by cliffs, with Douro river as a midpoint. A nice way to visit this place is by embarking on the quayside of the Centro Ambiental Luso-Espanhol (Luso-Spanish Environmental Center), which will take you through a winding course surrounded by high cliffs. A breathtaking scenario.
