Miranda do Douro

Miranda do Douro lies on a plateau between the Douro River, the Fresno River, and the Angueira River. Located within the Douro International Natural Park, it offers beautiful views of verdant slopes indented by steep cliffs, with the Douro River as its central point. A pleasant way to visit this place is by boarding the dock at the Luso-Spanish Environmental Center, which will take you along a winding course surrounded by high cliffs. It's worth taking a stroll through Miranda's historic center, observing the fifteenth-century buildings and street signs with names in Mirandese. This dialect, derived from Old Leonese, was recognized as Portugal's second official language in 1999. Currently, it is taught in some schools in the municipality and is believed to be spoken by between 6,000 and 10,000 people.
