Mourão

Mourão is one of the 14 municipalities of Évora's district and is located on the left bank of the Guadiana river. Composed of three parishes, it is bounded by Moura, Reguengos de Monsaraz and by the border with Spain. In the past Mourão became part of the Portuguese crown in the middle of the 13th century, having been inhabited from 1226. The first charter dates back to 1296 and was granted by D. Dinis, who also ordered the castle's construction. The village was attacked by the troops of Philip IV, but it was eventually given back a few days later. At the time of the administrative reforms, in 1855, Mourão was attached to the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, a process that would last until 1861. The main economic activities of the municipality are agriculture, livestock, small businesses and tourism. The construction of the Alqueva dam changed the landscape. The most prominent icon of this change is the new Aldeia da Luz village, since the old one was submerged. Even so, there are extensive zones of cultivation of cereals, olive groves and vineyards on the open. The gastronomy is characterized by strong flavors, not only thanks to the herbs, but also because of the artisanal cheeses and sausages. The sweets often rely on eggs, almonds and honey; many are of conventual provenance and continue to be this region's calling card.
