Santana

The municipality of Santana, located on North side of Madeira Island, has an area of 96 km2 and is composed of six villages: São Roque do Faial, Faial, Santana, island, São Jorge and Arco de São Jorge. Like most of the island, the land of Santana were discovered in the 15th century, although they have been colonised later than South by appear not be as fertile. The parish of Santana was created in June 1552, having been elevated to the category of town and county seat in 1835, and his name has its origin in the town's patron saint, Santa Ana. It was the first village in Madeira to be elevated to a city in the 21st century, the July 6, 2000. Other major tourist potential of Santana are the Laurissilva forest, which covers about one-third of the area of the municipality, Pico Ruivo, the third highest mountain of Portugal with 1861 m altitude, the cable car and the Natural Reserve of Rocha do Navio. The cuisine is equally characteristic, often based on corn and the sun-dried wheat. examples are corn soup dishes like poached, "potatoes" with corn, beans and pork or wheat soup, without forgetting the sweet honey cake for dessert. In the crafts, basketry, wicker and embroidered regional costumes, tapestry, weaving and corn husk dolls.
