Constância

This is one of the most beautiful towns of Portugal. Located in the middle of the Ribatejo region, on the north bank of the river Tejo, Constância is known not only for its flowery streets and historical center beauty, but above all for having been Luís de Camões' residence. The poet wrote here some of his poems during his banishment in Ribatejo, around the year of 1546. The county has about 3700 inhabitants and is composed of three parishes: Montalvo (with its important industrial zone), Santa Margarida da Coutada (where the military camp of Santa Margarida is located) and Constância, formerly known as Punhete. The current name was only acquired in 1833, during the reign of D. Maria II. In terms of heritage, the most relevant properties are its main churches: the Misericórdia and the mother churches. Also the Casa dos Arcos and the Pelourinho (pillory) are worth visiting. All these monuments are considered Buildings of Public Interest. The Centro Ciência Viva de Constância may be considered the main welcome card of the municipality. With its Parque Temático de Astronomia (astronomy theme park), this interactive space includes a planetarium, an auditorium, an amphitheater and five domes of astronomical observation. The fish dishes (the fish soup, fish stew or shad açorda) are the basis of the traditional cuisine in a county "served" by two rivers. Try the sweet tigeladas de Montalvo (kind of cake made with cinnamon and lemon) and queijinhos do céu (cheese-shaped sweets made with "soft eggs" and almonds).
