Fortim do Faial

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Faial Fortress recreates a military battery, semicircular in plan, with ten English cannons that were fired during celebrations dedicated to Our Lady of the Nativity. It has a support house where the São Roque do Faial Parish Council exhibition room is located. From this point it is possible to observe a large stretch of the coast and, on clear days, Porto Santo, Serra da Penha d'Águia and the northern part of Ponta de São Lourenço.

The Center for Environmental Education and Interpretation promotes activities that provide participants with contact with the natural values of the Chifre Protected Landscape. All the senses are put to the test, from smell to taste. The main building comprises a reception area, exhibition hall, workshop, auditorium with a capacity of 40 people, laboratory, documentation center, and technical office. It also has a reception center with male and female dormitories, with a capacity of 40 people, as well as a canteen and dining room.

The foundation of this village is attributed to the benedictin monks, in the 7th century. A special note to the unusual core of old houses, mostly of the 18th century. Among its monuments, the chapels with porches and a fountain, the mother church, the palace of the Marquis of Cascais and the pillory. The inhabitants still keep to some old customs, namely the fact that the women go to the fountain with their tin can jars. The gastronomy includes the famed Ançã cakes and the craftswork includes masonry, basket manufacturing, iron objects and more.

Circular castle facing the Tagus River, built in 1194 by Sir Afonso Pais and rebuilt in 1390 by Sir Nuno Álvares Pereira. It maintains the walls of the wall, partly battlemented and with traces of turrets. The entrance door was built in the 15th century and has a round arch. Inside the castle is the chapel of São Brás, which features a pleasant 17th century altarpiece. Belver Castle was the starting point for several actions against the Moors, and also served as support for King João I during the War of Independence.

Placed on the north side of Rossio, the National Theatre Dona Maria II, which name pays homage to the daughter of Dom Pedro, was built in the 1840s by the Italian architect Fortunato Lodi. The façade of this neoclassic building is composed by six columns coming from the São Francisco Convent and is ended by a triangular fronton where the figures of Apollo and the Muses are sculpted. On top of the fronton is possible to see the statue of Gil Vicente, maybe the most important Portuguese dramaturge of all times, considered to be the father of the national theatre.
