The "branda" is the place where one spends time during the summer, the time of the year when the weather is smoother (brando), as opposed to the winter time, when the shepherds return to their homes in the village. Hence, during the hot summer months the lowest altitudes become available for sowing corn and beans. The brandeiros tradition was at risk during the 60s and 70s, the epoch with the most migration. Later on, many have returned to Gave and to the Branda.

Located at an altitude of 588 metres, near the border, between the Malcata and Gardunha mountains, this village got its first charter in 1180. A fortress sin the beginning of Portugal, it used to have a castle of which only the watchtower, a part of the donjon and some parts of the walls remain. Much sought after by tourists, what remains of the Albicastrense Castle rises in an area overlooking the city. It was built by the Templars in the Middle Ages, this despite the traces of human presence in that area in pre- and proto-history, having been surrounded by a line of walls and towers. In the precinct of the fortress, in the citadel, were the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo and the Palácio dos Alcaides. This fortification was part of a defensive system that bordered the Tagus River.

The date of construction of the chapel of St. John the Baptist is not known, but its origins date back to medieval times. The inscription of 1602 at the side door indicates the year in which the body of the Church have been reworked, with the chancel has the inscription of 1708. Ancient mother church of Almada, it was building in the early Christian reconquest and was severely damaged by the earthquake in 1755. It was later rebuilt in the 18th century by Dom António, a brother of the king Dom João V. The chancel has a stone domed ceiling in the manuelin style. The high altar has a few tombs and valuable 18th century tiles. Archaeological digs have uncovered tombs from as early as the 12th century.
