This environmental interpretation centre is coordinated by the Portuguese society for the study of birds, along with the Regional Secretariat of the environment and the sea and the Regional Direction of forest resources. Its main objective is to preserve their habitat: the Laurissilva forest. The name of the Centre-Priolo-is a reference to the second most endangered bird in Europe, existing only to the East of the island of São Miguel.

In the heart of the town, in a large square, stands this imposing medieval castle, with a quadrangular plan and protected by cylindrical cubes, crowned with battlements, Gothic portals and a tall square keep. This, around 44 meters high, has a hall with a barrel-vaulted ceiling. At the entrance to the fortress, an armored marble tombstone inscribes the record of the castle's foundation, in 1359, by King Pedro I. In this garden, besides trees and bushes, there’s an archaeological nucleus where one may see part of the primitive pillory of Funchal (beginning of the XVI century), tombstones and an ancient coat of arms of the city. One of the main attractions pf this garden is the collection of exotic orchids. In the centre there are also two Manueline windows from the XVI century. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10h to 12h30 and from 14h to 18h.

This Monastery from the Order of Canons Regular from Augustinian Rule is composed by several buildings: door, dormitory, dining hall, kitchen, storage, cellar and workshop, all of them are developed around a cloister and two yards. It is worthy to mention some ensemble of baroque glazed tiles located in the Church and on the Chapter Room and the cloister with its typical architecture from the Order of Canons Regular from Augustinian Rule.
