It is thought that the initial construction of the Church of São Lourenço dates back to the end of the 13th century, but nothing remains of that primitive construction. With a single nave, dating from the 17th century, the church is characterized by tiles that relate passages in the life of S. Lourenço (patron of the church), dating back to 1749. From the various chapels that make it up (S. Sebastião, S. João Baptista, Nossa Senhora do Rosário and Nossa Senhora dos Anjos) that of S. Sebastião is also classified as a Property of Public Interest.

This is one of the oldest chapels of Beja, founded in the end of the XIII century as the vault of the knight Estêvão Vasques. In 1915 it was given to Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Beja, and ended up as a barn. In 1940 it was restored and reopened to cult. It is a chapel with a single nave and main chapel, totally arched, a characteristic of the gothic style during D. Dinis period, with French- Burgundian influence. The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação is a place of pilgrimage where many people goes in search of miracles. The first took place with Susana Dias who, supported by crutches, entered the chapel and laid down on the floor. At the moment of the elevation she wanted to kneel down, but in the end she got up, threw away her crutches and walked around the hermitage loudly proclaiming the miracle. It produced such a strong popular commotion that everyone helped in the construction of this Sanctuary of Senhora da Encarnação.

The Decadent Restaurant & Bar is the space of restoration of The Independent Hostel, situated in the Bairro Alto. It's a relaxed place, where you can sample traditional Portuguese cuisine with modern dishes by Chef Nuno Bandeira de Lima.
