This temple served as the Cathedral when the Bishopric of Aveiro was created. Its construction began in 1600, by Gregório Lourenço. In 1608 the Casa do Despacho was completed, in 1623 the body of the church and main door and, in 1653, the chancel. It is believed that this location, known as Fraga of the Cat and located north of the village of Walls, about 1100 meters above sea level, is an ancient settlement. It is a small elevation in the middle of the plateau of Mourela, where several ceramic fragments were found consistent with ancient occupation of the site.
