Tomar
City deeply connected to the history of the Knights Templar in Portugal, is located on the banks of the river Nabão and is bordered to the Southwest by the mountains d ´ Aire e Candeeiros. Presents some traces of the Paleolithic period, the Roman occupation and also the Arab presence, being, however, the marks of the Knights Templar and the order of Christ the most interesting. Take was conquered from the Moors in 1147 by Dom Afonso Henriques, in 1159, donated the castle of Waxes and Lands contiguous to the Templars. In the year 1160, these raised his greatest work, the Templar Castle of Tomar. In 1312, the Knights Templar was extinguished, by order of Pope John XXII, being then founded the military order of Christ. As early as the reign of Dom Manuel I in 1495, the Castle underwent several works, building the Convento de Cristo (World Heritage site) and the Paços da Queen. In the historic centre, you can visit the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais and the ancient synagogue of Tomar. Worthy of visit are still the Aqueduct of the convent of Christ (or Aqueduct of Pegões) and Castelo de Bode dam. This dam, built in 1951 in the Zêzere River, is one of the biggest attractions of the County, being a very popular location for water sports. Tomarense cuisine offers you delicious typical dishes: rice blood sausage with rapini, lamprey blood sauce, slices of Tomar, Candy Kiss me quickly, fresh cheese, pudding babybels sweets, cakes, eggs and chestnuts cheeses of gila. The biggest party in the municipality of Party Trays, which takes place only every four years, in early July. Domestic and foreign tourists flock to take to view the parade where passing trays decorated with flowers, bread and corn cobs.
