The parish of São Pedro da Afurada is known for its fishing traditions. In these fishermen’s quarters every year, on June, 29th, take place the festivities of its patron saint: São Pedro (Saint Peter). The bronze statue over a granite pedestal, located in the Vasco da Gama Street, is part of that spirit of adoration to the patron saint of the fishermen.

This extraordinary neoclassic building was outlined by José Costa e Silva and ordered to be built by the 2nd Marquis of Pombal in Queluz. The exterior spaces are developed around a central oval foyer. The sculptures were done by a sculptor from Mafra School, Francisco Leal da Costa and the stuccos pictorial decoration on the walls and ceilings is from Manuel da Costa.

This church belongs to the Irmandade da Nossa Senhora da Lapa. The church has a neoclassical style. This monument is famous for keeping inside the heart of the King Dom Pedro I, The Brazil Emperor. The tomb that guards this relic, presents the Portugal flag on one side and the Brazil flag on the other. At the superior part it has the swords of the Duque de Bragança.
