Classified as a national monument, it is one of the ex-libris of the city and one of the most original examples of the Baroque style in Portugal, having been built at the behest of D. João de Mendonça, Bishop of Guarda, around 1720. It features five lakes on the main slope, where the water features stand out, while the intermediate one has the Lago das Coroas and the Stairs of the Apostles and Kings, where all the Portuguese monarchs are represented. On the upper deck is the Staircase of Moses.

The urban park of the Ul, green space occupying an area equivalent to 30 football fields, is a modern and functional place of walk and recreation of the inhabitants of São João da Madeira and its visitors. Located in the city centre, the Park was designed by architect Sidónio Pardal and is characterized by the surrounding walls in granite and by a tree-lined interior that meanders the river Ul. It is a large space that invites to long walks or strolls in family through the freshness of the river and dams that were built there.

At the highest point of the city, at 1056 meters of altitude, is the Castelo da Guarda, better known as Torre de Menagem. The town was inhabited by order of Dom Sancho I, who granted it a charter and privileges in 1199, and transferred the seat of the diocese to here. This first charter was confirmed by the same king in 1217, 1229 and, later, in 1254, by Dom Afonso III. In 1510, Dom Manuel granted it a new charter and granted his son, Dom Fernando, the title of Duke of Guarda.
Convento de Santa Clara

This Convent assembles a set of buildings of extreme beauty. Although it is a construction from the XV century it is yet what it was built for 500 years ago: a convent of Franciscan nuns. The main chapel of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição church owns a magnificent silver sacrarium. It also has a large glazed tiles carpet from the XVIII century, representing the famous Santa Clara stone monument and, at the entrance, an important gothic tomb from the end of the XV century.

All the three villages that make up the Parish has served as headquarters: in all prayed and mass rose baptistery able. In the main square of the Jewish quarter is the famous ḥanukkah that lights up every year during the Festival of Lights, which usually takes place on the last weekend of the year. In this area, between the current streets Rua Direita and Rua Fonte da Rosa, you can find several small granite houses, with cruciform motifs on the threshold and on the small openings. The Jews were mostly artisans and merchants, so the lower floor of their houses was normally occupied by their workshop or shop.
