The silk industry developed during the reign of Afonso V, with the first factory being established in Vila Viçosa. Silk is woven on wooden looms, similar to those used for wool and linen. Freixo de Espada à Cinta is the only place in the entire Iberian Peninsula where silk is still 100% handcrafted.

Known as "the strangest in the world", Casa do Penedo is located in the Serras de Fafe. It was built in 1974 to be used as a holiday home, being perfectly integrated into the landscape. Established in 1911, this museum represents the island's culture, showcasing regional ceramics, agricultural implements, basketry, ethnographic pieces related to the cult of the Holy Spirit, and linen works primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries. Also noteworthy is the collection dedicated to Maestro Francisco de Lacerda, a native of São Jorge Island.
