The library opened in 1917, with various reading rooms, an audiovisual room and a lounge with internet connection stations, distributed over three floors.
The library opened in 1986, having already gone through other buildings. Has reading rooms for adults and children, a space for exhibitions of painting and photography and a youth information Office.
This space has a "hemerteca" (periodical publications area), a reading room, a juvenile reading room and multimedia. It also has a documentation centre, a reserved sector, a multifaceted room and an exhibitions’ area. Here you may consult about 50 thousand documents, among manuscripts, monographs, periodicals, multimedia material and the internet. The library promotes the domiciliary lending of books and animation, such as documental and bibliographic exhibitions, projections and debates, among others.
The library functions, since June 26, 1993, at the first headquarters of the "paços do concelho". Its books were mostly donated by the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian. It also has a multimedia section, with five computers available.
