After a troubled period at the Coimbra University, in 1822, Dr. Carlos José Pinheiro assembles what was left from the anatomic pieces and enlarges the collection of autopsy specimens. With the surgery advances the collection has been enlarging even more.

The fort was built primarily to defend the area, as well as its inhabitants, who traveled from the parish headquarters (Alcantarilha) to this location to dedicate themselves to their "art of work." Around 1720, a chapel dedicated to the fort's patron saint was built within the fortress. Today, it is known as the Chapel of Our Lady of the Afflicted.

Medieval, Mannerist and late-Baroque church, with a composite longitudinal plan, with three naves and five bays. It was built in the Middle Ages, probably in the 12th century, on the ruins of previous temples. From the medieval construction, it preserves the bell tower, the portico and some sculptures. Inside, there is the Santíssimo Chapel, next to the chancel.
