The result of a protocol signed between the City Council and the University of the Azores, this museum is organized with a central space, the Municipal Museum, and three museum centers integrated into the community: the Olaria museum center, the Forno de Loiça and the Fábrica da Luz museum center. Here you can see pottery objects, ceramics, learn about traditional arts and crafts and appreciate a collection of traditional vessels from the Azores. It also works as a research center in the areas of Archaeology, Ethnography and History.

Placed on the north side of Rossio, the National Theatre Dona Maria II, which name pays homage to the daughter of Dom Pedro, was built in the 1840s by the Italian architect Fortunato Lodi. The façade of this neoclassic building is composed by six columns coming from the São Francisco Convent and is ended by a triangular fronton where the figures of Apollo and the Muses are sculpted. On top of the fronton is possible to see the statue of Gil Vicente, maybe the most important Portuguese dramaturge of all times, considered to be the father of the national theatre.

This large, religious-style architecture is an example of one of the most symbolic Baroque monuments of the reign of King João V, built in 1753. The church we see today replaced a chapel. Among other notable features are the tiles from the second half of the late 18th century that decorate the walls; inside, the two marble altars of various hues are another highlight. Monument whose construction was ordered by the bishop D. Gaspar do Casal in 1557, 12 years after Leiria became a city. During the early XX century, the Convent and the Santo Agostinho church were used as a military lodging. The convent’s cloister and the baroque front sided by two towers deserve a close look.

The construction of this port dates back to the early 16TH century and was built by d. Jaime, Duke which gives the name to this Avenue. Features two columns that seem attached to shoulder pads for a few thick ropes. The position of the three nodes, which give you the name, symbolizes the Ducal House in relation to the Royal household.

Walking the 1.5 kilometer trail is an excellent way to discover part of the history and architectural heritage of this region. Along this route you can see gardens, architectural sites, churches, museums, the Clock Tower, the library and other details of great beauty.
