The first Franciscan convent founded in Portugal in 1222 by order of Dona Sancha, daughter of Dom Sancho I. Although deeply damaged by the 1755 earthquake, some elements from earlier periods remain. In the 16th-century cloister, the highly ornate Manueline portal that gives access to the Chapter House remains.

A church belonging to a Baroque convent, remodeled and converted into a Municipal Library, while maintaining parts of its original structure. The convent was built by the Discalced Friars of the Order of the Holy Trinity, with permission from Dom João V. It was the first monastery of the Cistercian Order founded in the Portuguese territory, in the 12th century, in a place with a strong monastic tradition evidenced in the monastery's invocation to Saint John, since, as a rule, the Cistercians dedicated their abbeys to the Virgin Mary. The facade of the church, rebuilt in the 17th century, retains an inscription with the date of its construction: 1152.

Work ordered to be built by King Afonso V, almost at the end of his reign. The pillory construction was ordered by Dom Manuel after the grant of the charter of Leitura Nova in 1521. Similar to other royal works of this time, here are also represented the arms of this monarch, armillary sphere and an iron Christ cross. After a troubled way, the pillory was rebuilt in the XX century accordingly to the original model.

A recent Pousada of Portugal, built in a monastery of the order of Cister, dating back to the 12th century. The restaurant is imposing, with a high ceiling and a stone table, where oncee used to be the monk's dining room. The menu is filled with dishes of the traditional cuisine of the Minho region. A special note to the desserts that are exhibited in a corner of the room.
