Vila Real de Santo António
The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António was founded in 1774, but its history goes back to ancient times, as evidenced by megalithic examples, Roman and Arab remains. In addition to the beaches and associated tourist attractions, Vila Real de Santo António includes three environmentally protected areas: the National Forest and Coastal Dunes, the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Salt Marsh Reserve, and the Ria Formosa. The populations continue to benefit from all these protected areas, as well as the Guadiana River. Currently, tourism is a significant sector in the local economy, with the municipality's beaches teeming with national and international tourists. Fish and seafood are the highlights of tourist menus, especially marinated mackerel and almond-based sweets.
