The origins of the primitive structure of this castle are not known, the castle of Arronches was restored by King Dinis in 1310. During the earthquake of 1755, the perimeter of the Castle underwent several changes and the subsequent urban sprawl came to change the configuration of the Castle area and respective walls in such a way that, the medieval castle, just left the ruins of one of the towers.

This fortification was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and later expanded by King Dinis. During the Manueline period, some alterations were made, of which the portal that gave access to the drawbridge remains. It also preserves the alcazaba with its pentagonal-based keep, the Torre das Cinco Quinas (Tower of the Five Corners), protected by machicolations and turrets, and the ring of walls that surrounds the town. Of particular note are the thickness and height of the alcazaba's curtain walls and the existence of the barbican.

This urban ensemble denotes the medieval character of this village. It is entirely surrounded by walls and has an urban structure that extends from the citadel, entrances, and parade grounds. Of the six gates and posterns cut into the walls, the Porta da Vila stands out, with its chapel oratory, balcony, and attached staircase, all covered in tiles. Built in the 16th century, the palace is a Manueline building located in the north wing of the castle. By the 17th century, the castle was already damaged, a situation exacerbated by the 1755 earthquake, and it was subsequently rebuilt.

Roman fortification, rebuilt by the Moors and transformed into a medieval castle. Completely destroyed by the Christian Reconquest, it was rebuilt in 1439 by the House of Bragança. Later, the Paço dos Gamas was built here, of which only a few ruins and the clock tower survive.
