Forte de Santa Catarina

Historical reference and emblematic element of the city, it was built at the end of the 16th century as part of the defense system of the Mondego mouth. It has a triangular structure, a half bastion and two irregular bastions. Inside there is a small chapel dedicated to Santa Catarina de Ribamar, and a lighthouse. Currently, within its walls, there is also a tapas and cocktail restaurant.

A fortress located by the cliff, near the Museum Count Castro Guimarães. The date of its primitive construction is not identified and only an inscription and the royal arms remain of it. It was deeply restored when it was given to the Sea Ministry, in 1868, to build a lighthouse there.

Built during the reign of Dom João IV, this fortress still maintains its primitive structure with its scuttles, its patrol walk and its stairways. The barrack, located in the middle of the stronghold and of the two waters rooftop, is very well preserved.

Its construction began in the end of the XVI century, being concluded in the next century. In 1832-33, during the Porto siege, it served as a storing and protection spot. Fortification with defence elements placed at the angles and meant to protect it from flank attacks, with a big defensive capacity. In the beginning of the XIX century, an urban change covered the set with rocks, withdrawing the castle from the mouth.

This small 17th century fortress has a small chapel with 18th century tiles. In 1976 the fortress was given to the Armed Forces social services to be used as a vacation site.

Currently, four gates and twelve bastions remain, built at different periods. Old artillery pieces can be seen on the terraces. It was remodeled in 1640.

At the far end of the Sítio Promontory, overlooking the North beach, King Sebastian ordered the construction of the São Miguel Fortress in 1577 to defend the cove from pirates. It was later rebuilt by order of Philip II in 1600. Its current layout was commissioned by King John IV during the restoration of the monarchy. Triangular in shape, it has a bastion at each corner, a sloping wall at the bottom, and, internally, features a parade ground on the second floor and casemates opening through several semicircular arches.
