Founded in 875, the Soalhães Monastery was donated to the bishop of Porto by D. Sancho II in 1267, and likely became the main church shortly thereafter. Remodeled in the 18th century, the Church of Soalhães retains its medieval main portal. Inside, it houses an interesting collection of tiles and carvings.

The Church of Santa Maria de Sobretâmega is a late medieval building that, however, retains a Romanesque flavor unique to this region. The location of this church, which replaced the parish church of the former parish of São Pedro de Canaveses, was an initiative of Queen Mafalda, founder of the inn and the bridge of Canaveses. In fact, it was the construction of the bridge itself that prompted the church's new location.

Located on the south bank of the Tâmega River and bordering Santa Maria de Sobretâmega, the Church of São Nicolau, next to the old Canaveses Bridge, displays a late design within the context of Portuguese Romanesque architecture, evident in its column-less, capital-less portals and plain corbels. This church preserves, though very fragmented, important remains of mural painting from the 16th and 17th centuries.
