Opened in 1825, it was oredered by the Marquês de Tomar. In the XIX century it was called the Passeio da Estrela. The vegetation is secular with about 800 arboreous species and large variety of flowers. It is a garden of romantic conception and a has a bandstand, an esplanade, a library, a greenhouse, artificial grottos, lakes and picnic area, being one of the most pleasant spaces in the city.

Of the original castle, only a portion of the citadel remains, along with some sections of the walls interrupted by turrets, and the Porta da Traição (Traitor's Gate). Still standing, but badly damaged, is the keep.

Baroque Temple of rectangular plan consists of a nave, a sacristy and a chancel. The classification of Property of public interest refers only to the high altar of gilded 17TH century. This presents a succession of six archivolts decorated with vegetal elements, mascarões, "putti" and elements of the passion of Christ, interrupted by lightning. The Center, a dressing room opened, with coffered ceiling, and a staggered Tribune.

Medieval chapel built between the 14th and 15th centuries, which still preserves several medieval elements, such as the round-arched doorway, the ribbed rib vault, the buttresses, and the corbels finishing the capitals. Also, noteworthy are the cannon gargoyles and the 16th-century frieze above the door and cornice, as well as the carved stonework of the openings. It was rebuilt in the 20th century.

The architectural set of the Whaling Museum is made up of boathouses from the last century, an attached blacksmith's tent and the space where the library and archive are located. Opened in 1988, it aims to preserve the memory of an activity that marked Azorean life - whaling art. It includes exhibits of pieces crafted from ivory teeth and a whaling canoe, used in whale hunting.
