It was the first public garden in the city, open in 1834. Its name comes from a former medieval leprosery demolished in the XVIII century. A Gothic castle, imposing and austere, where the summit towers with spires and four pinnacles stand out as ornamentation. The walls are protected by crenellated embrasures and loopholes. Outside the walls, it is worth visiting the Chapel of Our Lady of the Incarnation and the Chaplaincy House, in 17th-century Baroque style. The population moved to the vicinity of the castle attracted by the trade of goods that took place there, giving rise to the current city.

Visits to Casa da Tulha must be booked at the Municipal Museum.

The building consists of two sections with sober and well-proportioned lines, already revealing a neoclassical taste. In 1802, the two lateral sections were linked by a large triumphal arch, commemorating the visit of D. João IV. Inside, the highlight is a room with mural paintings, of the Pillement type, and the Convention Room, with maritime and mythological scenes. It was transformed into a hotel, but maintains its original design.
