The Ducal Palace was begun in 1501 by the 4th Duke of Braganza, Jaime, and until 1640 was residence of the noble family of the Kingdom's largest. With the Ascension to the throne of the 8th Duke, d. Castle located on top of a hill, in an area surrounded by the village. The walls were raised by the Arabs and, later, D. Dinis expanded the fortification and D. Manuel ordered its reconstruction. This castle was part of the defensive system of Linhas Torres. Ruined by the 1755 earthquake, it still retains some sections of the wall and the large semi-circular turret that defended the entrance to the former Palace. Inside the wall, in an oval shape, there is a chapel, the citadel that includes the keep and three cisterns.

Salir might have been the place where D. Paio Peres Correia awaited the arrival of D. Afonso III, so that together they could undertake the conquest of what remained in the province in the hands of the Moors. During the time of King Afonso III, this location became a stronghold, giving the castle a privileged role in the definitive conquest of the Algarve. It is presumed that the castle was burned down and rebuilt twice, and today only ruins of its walls remain.

When you enter in Leiria you can’t avoid noticing the castle that, from the top, seems to welcome those coming into the city. Conquered to the Moors in 1135, by D. The Corcéis, by João Fragoso, are at the Praça D. João I. The statues are in bronze and settled on polished granite plaques. They are two equal elements, where a young boy tries to tame a wild horse.

Evoking the King who leaved the Porto city, literally, his heart, this equestrian statue by the French sculptor Carmels, represents D. Pedro IV, in a symbolic gesture, offering the constitution to the people.

The primitive Church founded by d. Afonso Henriques, remain outside the apse remains of the primitive construction. It was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. Inside are three paintings on wood of the mid-16th century.

This pillory was transformed into a Calvary and it presents a three steps base above which it is settled a square base column. It witnessed the Foral granted by King D. Manuel I in the 12th November of 1514.
