Cabanas de Viriato

According to legend, it was the birthplace of Viriato, the famous Portuguese leader. It is also the birthplace of Aristides Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux, who saved thousands of Jews during World War II. Remains of importante houses can be seen here. Also, noteworthy are the main church, the chapel of Our Lady of Amparo, Christ the King, the Great Hall of the Theater, the halls of the Philharmonic Society, and the House of Aristides Sousa Mendes. Wrought iron and woodcarvings constitute the region's craftsmanship.

At the highest point of the city, at 1056 meters of altitude, is the Castelo da Guarda, better known as Torre de Menagem. The town was inhabited by order of Dom Sancho I, who granted it a charter and privileges in 1199, and transferred the seat of the diocese to here. This first charter was confirmed by the same king in 1217, 1229 and, later, in 1254, by Dom Afonso III. In 1510, Dom Manuel granted it a new charter and granted his son, Dom Fernando, the title of Duke of Guarda.

This is the most important testimony to the Roman presence in the Portalegre District. The remains found here belong to the Roman city of Ammaia. Of note is the Monumental Ensemble of the Porta do Arco, which features the bases of two towers that flanked a city entrance, the threshold of the gate, and a paved public square. Also, noteworthy are the structure of the Forum and Temple, and the Quinta do Deão Building, where a pavement, a water pipe, and inscribed stones were found. Also, noteworthy are the Forum Bathhouse and the Theater.

Built in the 18th century, this house is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque civil architecture. Constructed of granite, it features Rococo decoration concentrated in the windows and main door. This construction demonstrates elements of Douro Baroque architecture, influenced by Nicolau Nasoni. In the early 19th century, Napoleonic troops were stationed here, later setting fire to the building in 1810 before withdrawing. From 1895 onwards, it underwent partial reconstruction, initiated by the 3rd Viscount of Banho.

Located in the historic area of the village of Celorico da Beira, very close to the castle, stands this Cathedral of Serra da Estrela Cheese. The magnificent 17th-century building is worth a visit in itself. Dedicated to preserving the tradition of Serra da Estrela cheese, it is also part of the Farmer and Cheese Museum. Here you can buy and taste the famous cheese, as well as other regional delicacies such as black pudding, chorizo, ham, rye bread, honey, jams and wine.

Space Museum opened in 2002, with three storeys and four exhibition halls, where displays the earliest artistic traditions and Portuguese bread. The space is divided in Bread cycle Room, Room of political, Social and religious Bread, Bread art Room and Pedagogical Room. There is also a restaurant where the King is, as expected, the bread. Be sure to visit the old grocery store, where they acquire various kinds of bread here produced. Tertulias and temporary exhibitions are frequent activities of the Museum.

A house with a rectangular plan and two floors, construction attributed to the House of Bragança. The "Paços do Concelho", the Courthouse and the Municipal Administration were located here until the beginning of the 20th century. Later it had other functions, namely Jailhouse of the parish on the first floor that still has windows with iron bars. On the south façade, one can view two lateral flights of stairs that unite before the second floor with an entrance topped by the House of Bragança's coat of arms.

Building dating from the early 19TH century, after being refurbished at the end of the Decade of 70. At this point, suffered profound changes in its structure, with emphasis on the advancement of the facade with coverage and balcony that opens on the terreiro do toural. Here they ran various social institutions, such as the finance, the Bureau of internal revenue, the offices of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, and the post office. In front of this building is the "gallows oak", where they were tragically punished criminals, until 1844.
