This village, located by the Mondego river, is of the 12th century. In 1514 it was given a charter by Dom Manuel. The county seat, the town of Crato, was built on the ruins of an important city, perhaps Carthaginian, and had a charter in 1232. There are several archaeological monuments in this area.
