This environmental interpretation centre is coordinated by the Portuguese society for the study of birds, along with the Regional Secretariat of the environment and the sea and the Regional Direction of forest resources. Its main objective is to preserve their habitat: the Laurissilva forest. The name of the Centre-Priolo-is a reference to the second most endangered bird in Europe, existing only to the East of the island of São Miguel.

The outer wall, in a semicircular shape, surrounded the medieval village and the so-called Castelo Velho. Today, only the remains of the castle with four turrets and a door, the ruins of the Church of São Tiago, built in the 14th century, and the Palace of the Mayors remain. The Castle is a unique viewpoint of the Guadiana River, the village, the salt pans and vast horizons of the sea.

Presents a simple longitudinal plant, with the main facade in gable and a straight Dick portal surmounted by a telescope and a Bell Tower. It presents 6000 pieces distributed across 10 rooms that surround the cloisters, where the art gallery is located. Most of the pieces were offered by families from Montemor.
