The submarine valley known as the Nazaré Canyon is the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world. Cutting across the continental shelf in a roughly east-west direction, it extends for more than 170 km in length and reaches a depth of over 5,000 meters in the abyssal plain where this canyon flows into the sea. Known in the Middle Ages as the Campo do Olival (olive grove), its name is due to the bishop’s ropery, who was installed there in the XV century. In 1611, the former Campo was converted into an Alameda (lane) and, in 1865, by the hand of the German Emile David, the garden was born. This hostel was born of recovery of a former Palace, dating from the 18th century and owned by the Viscount of Estoi, José Francisco da Silva. Built in the 13th century to house the mendicant order of San Francisco, it underwent several renovations in the following centuries, with the Mannerist façade dating back to 1635. In the second half of the 19th century, in the convent area, it was built the Military Hospital and, later, the Duke of Bragança Asylum. Among the various 18th century altarpieces it has, the one in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição stands out, in which some rocaille applications are notorious.

With a great architectonical simplicity, the Almas chapel dates from the beginning of the XVIII, and was repaired and enlarged in 1801. In 1929, the façades were covered with azulejos, by Eduardo Leite, representing the life of São Francisco de Assis and of Santa Catarina. The main façade presents a glass window by the painter Amândio Silva. Inside, the panel painted by Joaquim Rafael, representing the Lord’s Ascension and the image of Nossa Senhora das Almas stand out.

Fort located at the foot of Serra da Arrábida. Its tower is dated from 1390. In 1572 it suffered enlarging works and was completely remodelled after the Restoration War. The chapel, covered with glazed tiles from the XVIII century, is worthy of notice. In the XIX century it was a prison and later the holydays residence of King D.Carlos and Queen D. Amélia. In 1909; it became a hospital for orthopaedic diseases and maintains its function until today.

This temple was constructed on the 16th century; it possesses three naves divided by round arches and fifteen hundreds columns with Ionic capitals. The wooden roof has in the central roof mate, an important and rare oeuvre. The main chapel has an altarpiece dated from the 17th century and the walls are covered in white, rose and black marble. It stands out the four panels in board with paintings from Diogo de Torres, the carving and the imagery.
