Oliveira de Azeméis

The milestone, one of the testimonies of the Antiquities of Oliveira de Azeméis, was found during the demolition of the Church of Ul, in the late 18th century. Removed from their place of origin had several locations, finding itself today exposed at the square near the Church. This milestone marks the 12TH Mile until Langobriga (Civitas in Fiães, Santa Maria da Feira) and probably the Mile route between 16TH LX Braga and Lisbon, and was erected during the rule of Emperor Tiberius, between 23 and 24 of our age.

Anyone traveling from the neighboring municipality of Almeirim to Santarém via the Don Luís Bridge, which crosses the Tagus River, will find the walls of the Ribatejo capital before them. However, little remains of Santarém's imposing and ancient fortifications, although in the Jardim das Portas do Sol, which sits atop the walls, it is still possible to find three turrets. Several sections of walls and a stretch of the Porta de Santiago are other vestiges of what was once an important medieval castle.

Located close to the Double Doors of Santo António, this building, with Baroque characteristics, impresses with its architecture with a long and narrow rectangular plant, distributed over two floors with transversal, vaulted barracks and a fireplace. The monument was built in the 18th century by the Count of Lippe, a German military and politician who served in the Portuguese Army, and functioned as an Infantry Barracks. Featuring a royal coat of arms on the façade, the Quartel das Esquadras is the final object of a set of infantry barracks with the same typology, usually visible in the Alentejo squares.

The Pedro and Ines footbridge, designed by engineer Cecil Balmond and Adam da Fonseca, was built under the program to link the banks Polis, right and left of the Mondego River. Inaugurated in November 26, 2006, presents 275 meters long, four wide, having half a square, with eight feet wide. The bridge is in wood and guards from the Board (protection grids) present four glasses different colors: yellow, blue, green and pink. The crossing was already regarded as an icon of architecture.

It is, in fact, the Clock Tower of Santarém and was erected in the 15th century on top of a tower within the walled enclosure of the old medieval town. It is one of the city's best-known buildings, and its popular name, Torre das Cabaças (Tower of the Gourds), comes from the clay gourds used to amplify the sound of the imposing bronze bell dating from 1604. From its 26-meter height, it is possible to see the city's urban layout and the surrounding fields. Currently, it houses the Time Museum.
