Commissioned by Governor Duarte Sodré Pereira to defend that anchorage, this small fort was built in the early 20th century to replace an earlier 16th-century fortification dedicated to Saint Sebastian, which had been destroyed by a strong alluvial flood in 1803. It is a circular tower with a revivalist design, retaining the original Baroque inscription and coat of arms.

The original church, likely founded in the 16th century, was destroyed by fire in 1639. Years later, in the 17th century, a new church was built in a location less exposed to the force of the sea. In 1757, it suffered significant damage from the "Mandado de Deus" earthquake, in 1945 from a major tidal surge, and in 1980, from another earthquake.
