In September 1957 the Earth began to tremble and, from there, Faial was never the same. For 13 months, between September 27, 1957 and October 24, 1958, a volcanic phenomenon completely transformed this tip of Faial island in three distinct eruptive phases. Panicking, the inhabitants of Capelo and Praia do Norte runned away, or to the nearby islands or to the United States. Today, one can still verify the results of the eruption: fields and houses buried, the Capelinhos Lighthouse completely unusable (now renovated to the Volcano Interpretation Centre) and a rugged landscape, almost lunar.

Downstream from Vila Velha de Ródão, the Portas de Ródão (Ródão Gates) is an imposing geological formation where the Tagus River breaks between two steep walls (approximately 170 meters high) into a deep lake, carved by a supposed ancient waterfall that gradually disappeared until the river reached the lake's level. Besides being home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in the country, it is a privileged location for fauna and avifauna research, where 116 bird species can be observed, many of them considered endangered and some rare.

Created in 1933, this was the first museum built from scratch in Portugal, designed by architects Paulino Montês (1897-1962) and Eugénio Corrêa (1897-1985). The José Malhoa Museum displays the largest collection of works by its patron and an important collection of 19th and 20th-century paintings and sculptures. Completing the collections are a section on Caldas da Rainha ceramics – centered around the importance of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro's work for local faience – and the unique set of 60 terracotta sculptures of the "Passion of Christ" – an open-air sculpture collection, and an art library with over 5,000 items.

This is one of the most important Marian Shrines in Portugal. Its main heritage value, included in the attached museum of sacred art, lies in the richness of its artwork, architecture, gilded wood carvings, images of saints from various periods, varied liturgical objects in gold and silver, gold-embroidered vestments, oil paintings of clergy figures, and a valuable collection of ex-votos. This Shrine was elevated to the status of Royal Shrine by Royal Charter in 1873, and together with its eight chapels and staircase, it constitutes one of the most interesting and beautiful places in the municipality.

The Theatro Club was commissioned in 1904 by Antonio Lopes, from the architect Moura Coutinho.
