Antigo Convento de Nossa Senhora do Amparo

This was the convent of the order of Saint Paul Hermit and was built following the 16th-century urban expansion. It was composed by Church, chancel, cruise, sacristy and cloister. In the 20th century was adapted in order to make way for an oil refining factory. Today is privately owned and is in a poor state of conservation.

The inscription on the tombstone that at the top of the monument attests and glorifies the election of Nossa Senhora da Conceição as the patron saint of Portugal. It is said that Paulo da Gama, brother of Vasco da Gama, settled in the Seixal region to oversee the construction of caravels destined for the discovery of the sea route to India. Also noteworthy is the beautiful garden outside the house. The space is also part of the Manuel Cargaleiro Arts Workshop, an architectural project by Álvaro Siza Vieira.
