Built on a hill overlooking the river, human occupation of this area dates back to the Iron Age. It allowed control of the river port that connected it to the sea and protected the population from enemy attacks. A vast walled area, two towers reinforce its defenses. A medieval castle, it has undergone several restorations over the centuries. All that remains of the original castle are the battlemented walls flanked by thick masonry turrets, the keep with twin windows, and the Alcaide-Mor Palace. On the ceiling of the fortress's armory, you can see interesting paintings of armor, war trophies, and the royal shield of King João V. Visigothic architectural elements are visible on the walls.

It has the shape of an irregular octagon, and the keep, with rooms covered by Gothic vaults, is made of marble. The residential buildings, barracks, and military warehouses in the Plaza de Armas are in ruins.

Archaeological evidence attests to the existence of a protohistoric fortified settlement, later Romanized. Only a few remains of this castle remain. From the original castle, the Santo Antônio Gate is visible, consisting of two thick walls, over which sits an arch with a broken outline on the outside and a perfect arch on the inside. The castle sits atop a steep hill at the western edge of the Ossa mountain range. The original fortification still includes the wall and gates from the reign of King Dinis. Within the walls, the highlight is the Paço de Homnagem (Homage Palace), which, along with the keep, forms a vast, regular quadrilateral. The palace's design is inspired by Italian Renaissance palaces.

Within this magnificent monument, the extensive walls, the quadrangular turrets, the keep, and what remains of the barbicans are preserved, bearing witness to its defensive value. Rebuilt during the reign of King Manuel I, the armillary sphere, a Manueline-style window opening in the coastal wall, and the royal coat of arms are visible. Inside the walls, vestiges of the Chapel of Saint Michael and a Romanesque colonnade remain.

This castle possessed one of the best defensive border walls. Currently, only a few gates, sections of the wall, and towers crowning the hilltop remain. Several anthropomorphic tombs are also preserved near the east gate. Its layout had an irregular configuration, almost without battlements, and with three gates (the West Gate, the Arch Gate, and St. Peter's Gate), a keep, and four more towers.
