Belmonte

As we approach the entrance to the village, we come across its Castle, classified as a National Monument. Pedro Álvares Cabral, the most famous inhabitant of Belmonte, was born here. The fort was built in the 13th century, at the behest of D. Afonso III, and in 1466 it became the residence of the Cabral family. One of its most emblematic points is the Manueline-style window from the 16th century, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the valleys and mountains that surround the village.

Vila Franca do Campo

The result of a protocol signed between the City Council and the University of the Azores, this museum is organized with a central space, the Municipal Museum, and three museum centers integrated into the community: the Olaria museum center, the Forno de Loiça and the Fábrica da Luz museum center. Here you can see pottery objects, ceramics, learn about traditional arts and crafts and appreciate a collection of traditional vessels from the Azores. It also works as a research center in the areas of Archaeology, Ethnography and History.

Museum located in the historic area of Melgaço, in the former police building. Here you can admire thousands of posters and photographs, silent film time machines, more modern equipment and many films. A vast collection donated to the municipality of Melgaço by Jean-Loup Passek, passionate about the village. Passek directed the cinematographic department at the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris and was director of the La Rochelle Film Festival. The museum contains a permanent exhibition area, with a small auditorium, and an area dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

The set is formed by a tower, the Casa do Despacho and Clérigos Church. This monument is the maximum exponent of the Porto’s baroque style. Although it is less known than the Clérigos Tower, the Clérigos Church was built first, between 1732 and 1750. It is a Nasoni’s typical construction. Inside, the golden carving and the baroque, rococo and neoclassic pelmets stand out. This was the first big work by Nasoni and the one which made him famous. This author would never leave the Porto city and died here.
