At the highest point of the city, at 1056 meters of altitude, is the Castelo da Guarda, better known as Torre de Menagem. The town was inhabited by order of Dom Sancho I, who granted it a charter and privileges in 1199, and transferred the seat of the diocese to here. This first charter was confirmed by the same king in 1217, 1229 and, later, in 1254, by Dom Afonso III. In 1510, Dom Manuel granted it a new charter and granted his son, Dom Fernando, the title of Duke of Guarda.

Vila Nova de Foz Côa

Built in the 18th century, this house is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque civil architecture. Constructed of granite, it features Rococo decoration concentrated in the windows and main door. This construction demonstrates elements of Douro Baroque architecture, influenced by Nicolau Nasoni. In the early 19th century, Napoleonic troops were stationed here, later setting fire to the building in 1810 before withdrawing. From 1895 onwards, it underwent partial reconstruction, initiated by the 3rd Viscount of Banho.

The first museum created in the Algarve, in 1874, is located in the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Deactivated in 1834, after the extinction of religious orders, the convent was used as a cork factory during the 20th century. Later, in 1960, the works of adaptation to a museum began. It presents permanent exhibitions of Archeology (Roman and Islamic periods), Religious Painting from the 16th to the 19th century and Painting from the 20th century, as well as temporary exhibitions of the most varied themes.
