São Jorge Island is also known as the "Island of Fajãs" due to the massive presence of these fertile spots, dotted with the occasional white house dotting the landscape. Fajã das Almas, also known as Fajã do Calhau, is another of these rare beauties, well worth a careful visit. To learn a little of Amarante, start your walk along the bridge, in the city centre. This bridge, classified as a national monument, worth a visit to admire its Baroque details and to enjoy the beautiful view over the Tâmega River. Continue your spent by the banks of the River, passing by several gardens that the city offers. Finally, pass the historical centre streets, admiring its old houses.

It was the first public garden in the city, open in 1834. Its name comes from a former medieval leprosery demolished in the XVIII century. Formerly a dependency of the Arouca Monastery, to receive conventual income, Casa da Tulha is part of the Municipal Museum, being its current museum nucleus. The inscription, of 1760, places its construction in the 18th century. With an interesting general appearance, it is the portal – topped by fires and a cross – that takes center stage in this architectural piece. Visits to Casa da Tulha must be booked at the Municipal Museum.

The building consists of two sections with sober and well-proportioned lines, already revealing a neoclassical taste. In 1802, the two lateral sections were linked by a large triumphal arch, commemorating the visit of D. João IV. Inside, the highlight is a room with mural paintings, of the Pillement type, and the Convention Room, with maritime and mythological scenes. It was transformed into a hotel, but maintains its original design.
